Group Financial Sanctions is a unit within Correspondent Banking AML Department / Group Compliance Division, responsible for ensuring Erste Group’s compliance with European and international financial sanctions regimes & embargoes, relevant legislation and best practice standards in Erste Group and its subsidiaries. Group wide common IT system, data analytics and reporting for group governance and common model development are an important part of our sanctions compliance program, but in order to be effective and efficient, the financial sanctions investigations must be supported by ongoing data driven system parameter evaluation and tuning as well as on designed models based on data analytics. In order to strengthen our team, we are searching for a Data Scientist within our Group Financial Sanction team.

In this role, you should be highly analytical with a passion for analysis, math and statistics. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential for interpreting data and having a passion for data and algorithms. You will be in the driving seat for building up the data analytics capability for fighting financial sanctions in Erste Group.

Your Tasks

  • You are ready to deliver independently simple and complex tasks and assignments, not only within its specification
  • You collaborate with compliance and business units to identify and address financial sanctions patterns on the basis of data analytics you performed
  • You are responsible for transforming these patterns into data insights as well as AI/machine learning based detection models in the area of financial sanctions aiming at improving risk detection and efficiency
  • You are responsible for deploying, monitoring and the recalibration of detection models as well as driving the periodical system parameter evaluation and tuning of the financial sanction tools in production to assure a constantly high service quality
  • You are supporting in daily business related tasks with regard to Sanctions & Embargoes (making a decision to release or reject stopped transactions based on sanctions related indicators, handling “requests for information (RFI)" to/from correspondent banks & advising business departments on the execution of deals in case there is a sanction related tangent)
  • You are contributing to the further development of the sanctions & embargoes related IT systems/filters and list management and coordination of the corresponding internal and external requirements with all stakeholders
  • You are supporting group governance function in data driven evaluation the implementation of the local as well as outsourced processes, etc.

Your Background

  • University degree or similar education/ professional experience with a focus on quantitative disciplines
  • Working experience of 1 - 3 years within quantitative analytics, preferentially in Big Data environments
  • Fluent knowledge of Python and/or SQL; other tools like R, SPARK, KNIME as well as major AI/Machine Learning languages are of advantage
  • Understanding of common machine learning approaches (NLP, deep learning, etc.) and algorithms are of advantage
  • Experience in data visualization using tools such as Tableau, QLIK, R Shiny and (data) story telling capabilities are of advantage
  • A good understanding of the banking business, ideally with concrete financial sanctions know-how are of advantage
  • Assertiveness, problem solving skills, negotiation skills, presentation skills, analytical and structured thinking, lateral thinking, cultural diversity
  • Language skills: Fluent in English, German and/or any CEE language are of advantage
